MD/PhD

Old Business:

Study Space update: The meeting with Dr.Cohen was discussed. He sincerely recognized the problem with study space but voiced that he inherited the situation, giving him very little choice but to satisfy the child psych. group with Alumni Hall C. He encourages the compromise with the 15th floor being guaranteed to the students until Alumni Hall C is ready for student use. He discouraged the use of the rumored threats. He tried to illustrate his distinctiveness from past administrations and his desire to improve relations between students and the administration. Discussion on the meeting showed many council members satisfied with the Dean's effort at explaining the situation, others voiced doubts that this administration is any different than the rest as far as broken promises go.

New Business:

Jason Schneider(AMA) Discussion: He voiced disappointment with the lack of financial support of the newly planned current events discussions and dinner lectures. He also stressed that aside from financial backing, what is needed on a grand scale is moral backing for all organizations through personal attendance and aid by the Student Council. Jason raised problems with the budgeting process and proposed budget discussions to be completed in the spring. He also suggested more official correspondence between clubs and the Student Council. All the council members asserted that their participation in class events has been more than adequate, but did agree with the need to foster more overall community involvement. Finally, the council voiced that due to the lack of full disclosure of funds (especially by the AMA), and accurate end of year reports , it has become difficult to discern between modest and extravagant budget requests.

Club Proposal: Cooking Club wants to have 5 events costing about $300. They want to run a test event with $75. It was tabled until they come up with a more detailed description.

NEW BUSINESS:

Meeting with Dr. Oliva: Student desires to maintain ties to the downtown campus were discussed. He said this won't change with current merger discussions. He favors student input into the merger discussions and admitted that the clerkship issue does deserve student input, even if the merger discussions are not involving the medical schools. He stresses that no merger involving the schools is being discussed and that the eventual budgets of the combined hospital system will be controlled by a committee comprised of trustees from each hospital/school. A new development that is being discussed is that all Mt. Sinai degrees will be conferred by NYU, but in exchange, NYU is demanding the right to appoint the Sinai dean. He also fully supported student input into the Dean search process.

AMC Conference Update:

  1. There will be computerized based testing of the USMLE step 1 for the class of 1999, step 2 for class of 2001, and step 3 for the class of 2000.
  2. There will be computer adaptive testing (smart tests).
  3. House staff unionization issues were brought up.
  4. Minority affair sector will run minority sensitivity tests.
  5. A student abuse initiative was talked about.
