Corrections to Minutes 10/10:
2) The honoraria request from Debbie Gutman was for AMSA, not AMA.
New Items:
1) Funding Request
Linda from STATS came to request additional funds for supplies. In previous years, workshops were spread out and a smaller set of supplies could last throughout the year. Now, the workshops are clustered so that several groups are going to need the same set of supplies at the same time, so more need to be purchased. This extra amount is $86.50 (beyond the $100 already requested). If the supplies are purchased, it will supply STATS for several years.
Since the new request is under $100 dollars and it is added to a previous request, it falls under Diana's discretion to provide funding. One further suggestion was made: seek free supplies from drug companies or other firms that market these products, possibly ask the Dental School for free or discounted dental dams and so on.
2) Contingency Fund
It was suggested that student groups that have large unexpected expenses fill out a contingency fund request before applying to Student Council for money.
3) News from Downtown
President Olleva is hosting a Halloween Party at his house Tue Oct 31, from 6-8 pm.
Jason is hoping to get more information on student clubs formed downtown that are not offered here, so that medical students can look into joining them. Please talk to him if you want further information on downtown clubs.
4) Graduate Student Office
Catherine found that the graduate student office downtown has several programs that medical students might want to take advantage of, including day care, student life stuff and mixers. They even have a student emergency fund where they can loan you money, etc, if you lose your wallet or find yourself in straits.
They can also provide an additional source of funding for some medical school events. If anyone is interested in cosponsoring an event, they are considering dates in April. There is a mixer planned tentatively for Dec 2. Demetre has obtained a list of student council contacts from the other graduate schools in NYU.
5) CORE
Dean Farber resolved that issue of recruiting women and minorities is outside of the scope of CORE. Student Council will need to address these issues instead through committees in the medical center that are already set up to deal with therse issues, only we need a list of these groups and contacts. We will request that intially we have a non-voting student representative or liason on these committees, and hopefully this position may evolve into a permanent or voting position.
6) Computer Issues
John-Paul is in the process of drafting a letter in support of the library's purchase of $400,000 in new computers and equipment over the next four years. The issue once again is placement and access; if the computers are placed in the library, access during libray hours is open to anyone from NYU, not exclusively medical students. The question is will this measure alleviate the current computer crunch felt by students? John-Paul will try to draft a more specific letter on which everyone will vote next week whether or not to support.
7) Cafe Cards
Student Council will look into modifying vending and laundry machines to accept Cafe Cards. This request fits in with the inital intent of the cafe card so, it shouldn't be a problem, but we need to talk to Shelly.
8) Central Phone System
Greenberg is already wired for Centrex, and there are plans to also wire Rubin. The original proposal was unlimited local calls for $25/month, possibly including call wait service and voice mail. The details of this plan should be brought up through CORE and the details of price and service clarified so we can decide if it will be a financially practical option for most students.
9) Student Cafeteria
It was brought up that there is an increasing crunch for space in the student cafeteria during lunch hours, because it is too cold to sit outside. Since Yince is already in contact with Chet from food services about keeping the cafeteria open additional hours, he will investigate the possibility of reserving student space during lunch hours.
10) Second Year Halloween Party
Will be Tue October 31, at NYC Jukebox. 9-12 open bar, tickets $10 through Don and Carol, $20 at the door. May need people to help take food up, Yince has arranged transport.
11) AAMC Conference in Washington, D.C.
Funding is available for four students, an announcement should be made to all classes to get people to come. Students will be expected to attend conference events if they decide to go on the trip. The group will leave Fri Oct 27, at 4 pm.
12) Pancake Breakfast
Rich and Alan are picking a date and arranging the event.
13) Bagel Brunch
Jewish Student Association is sponsoring a Bagel Brunch 10:30 am Sun Oct 29.
14) Pumpkin Carving
Pumpkins and candy will be provided by 1st years 2-5 pm on Sat Oct 28.
