Class of 2001
Class is 2/3 done with boards. There are numerous horror stories however; they have been conveyed to the first and second years in an effort to avoid repeating the problem.
Class of 2002
MD/PhD
Bally's - Manish is working with them in an effort to accept the number of people we have now. He will e-mail the student body by Friday to update them on the final decision.
Firewall - Enclosed letter:
To Class of 2000, 2001 and 2002,
Last night Student Council met with Dean Deeley, Dr. Nachbar, Dr. Smith and other members of the computing staff. We discussed the changing requirements of computer security in the information era. This security issue explains the abrupt changes in computer configuration and subsequent installation of last weeks "Firewall". Together we emphasized the diverse needs of different people at the medical center. Due to the variance in computer use, the medical center's system will be repartitioned into multiple sections. The student section will have the lowest security and therefore access to the most programs. This project will take an estimated 3-12 months to complete. In the interim many of the programs have been reinstalled and are now functional. However, several programs such as FTP, ICQ and other instant messenger programs pose the most serious risk to the security of the system and therefore, these programs will not be available in the near future. Other programs like video conferencing, net meeting and real time video/audio will be added on an individual as necessary basis.
During the meeting we recognized that both the FAFSA and ERAS applications would be impossible to complete under the current configuration. Therefore, access to these programs should be restored immediately. In some situations, users will need to reconfigure the settings in their preference folders. Help instructions can be found at this web site.
You can help shape the new network in several ways. Two students will be members of the committee to repartition the system. Once that committee forms you will be able to give them your input. In addition, we were informed that the questionnaire that has been circulating around and is also attached to this letter is very helpful in identifying which programs students need. These considerations will be taken into account during design of a new system.
In retrospect it was recognized that sending hard copy memos was not the most appropriate method to inform students of the changes, especially since one third of the student body was still not informed. However, we have now established a mutually beneficial line of communication with computing and we don't anticipate these types of miscommunication in the future.
Thank you for your patience and assistance during this project. I will inform you of changes in the upcoming weeks.
Sincerely,
Brian Robert Keegan
Student Council President
